sniffles and cicadas
The household is sick. We had a good, long run without any illness. Two months (June and July). So I'm not surprised but it's still rough. Toddler is mostly recovered as we descend further into malaise, bad combination. Now, about the writing:
microfiction (100 - 500 words)
2 out at Fairfield Scribes
2 got through NYC Midnight's Microfiction Contest (3rd place in round 1 and 5th place in round 2) ✨
My final round submission is out now. Results to be announced Aug 27.
"Cosmo Again" got published as a community drabble @reachyourapex ✨
flash (1,000 words)
6 complete
4 out at ITAL, FFM, FFO, The Sprawl, khōréō, and NYC Midnight (contest)
1 I've paused on submitting to revise or abandon
1 placed 3rd in round 1 of NYC Midnight's Flash Contest ✨
short story (1,000 - 5,000 words)
2 out at Augur
2 in progress (1,500 and 3,300 words) -- very different concepts, one takes place in an expansive world with lots of politicking while the other is a near-future, interior story, more "soft" science fiction.
novellette & novella (7,500 to 20,000 words)
1 idea slowly developing here. I'm accumulating material for it like a small rodent readying for the cold. I've written a couple vignettes but need to develop a 12-week sprint to make any significant progress on it. I'm thinking Oct, Nov, Dec.
overall stats
37 rejections
17,600 words written since 2023
13,300 words written in 2025
on the horizon
I've signed up for a Clarion West Flash Fiction workshop with Sam Asher. Thinking of it as "dipping my toes" into higher tempo writing with the goal of applying for the 2026 intentisve summer workshop.
